Our Story
Big Bluestem Restoration Company started as a dream many years ago. The concept was a combination of many things: our past, creativity, hobbies, interests and dreams for our future. We had recently sold our first home and made a big commitment to buying an old farmhouse that needed a lot of work to fit our future. It was during this time of transition, buying & selling a home, having a family and feeling excited but scared at the same time that Big Bluestem Restoration Company started. We had a few bends and turns in the road and after many years of dreaming, life has shown us now is the time for BBRC to be started.
We bought our first home when we were in college. It was in foreclosure and in need of a lot of love. It was an opportunity for us that completely changed our lives. Without this home, we would not be where we are today personally, professionally or financially. We lived and worked on our little house on Water Street for 4 years, learning a lot about life, marriage and the value of hard work. A little old farmhouse went up for sale down the road and we put the house up for sale when Alicia was 38 weeks pregnant with our first daughter. Another home remodeling adventure was on the horizon.
We purchased our farm property in 2015. Our 8 acre farm is surrounded by 3,000 acres of state wildlife area that has an abundance of Big Bluestem prairie grass. With Alicia's background in ecology and love for native plants & grasses, the name Big Bluestem was born.
The house was tired. Owned by the same family for a hundred years and lived in by a single man who had recently passed away. There was something special about the setting and the lifestyle that the house could provide to our family. We had to see beyond the outdated kitchen, small upstairs and flat design. After years of weekends and late nights, our Big Bluestem Farmhouse is (nearly) complete and we are ready to share our talents with you.
Our goal for Big Bluestem Restoration Company is to help our customers get into a home that fits their life. We specialize in custom projects- old homes, reclaimed materials and creating custom spaces.
